Globus. - Globus. - Himmelsglobus. -
Der Himmel. Celestial globe. Engraving, painted with egg-white, on rack with wooden stand (walnut), octagonal horizon with coloured engraving of the zodiac signs on paper, with brass meridian. By the J. G. Klinger, Nuremberg around 1825. Diameter ca. 33 cm, total height ca. 55 cm.
Fine celestial globe by Johann Georg Klinger, one of the last great Nuremberg globe makers. Klinger (1764-1806) was working as a drawer, engraver and publisher in Nuremberg. He made both terrestrial and celestial globes as of 1790, the latter according to the latest findings of the British astronomer Fr. Wilh. Herschel (1738-1822). After his death the art shop was first continued by his wife and then by P. Dreykorn as of 1831 up until 1851. - The celestial globes by Klinger are in possession of many important library and private collections, the Nuremberg 'German. Nationalmuseum' owns an earlier but comparable copy. - Celestial illustration somewhat faded, paper somewhat torn in places and with loss of image in places, rubbed, horizon with small chipped spots. The pole ring lacking. - All in all still in good condition.
Celestial globe by J. G. Klinger, one of the last great globe producers of Nuremberg, pulished posthumously in the Klingersche Kunsthandlung. Copper engraving on one-footed wooden stand with wooden octagonal horizon ring illustrated with the zodiacs and full-circle brass meridian. - Overall partly rubbed (with loss of illustration) and with some small tears, small spots of horizon flaked off. Overall well preserved.
