Sabin 30968. - Cordier, Sinica 2122. - Nissen, Zool. 3132. - First edition. - Official report of the famous expedition of Perry, with the aim to force Japan out of its isolationism and to open itself for world-wide trade. The plates by Brown and Heine show views, costumes, portraits etc. They communicate a clear image of China and Japan around the middle of the 19th century. - Slightly browned and foxed in places, binding and joints defective, some ll. and plates with marginal defects. Binding scraped and bumped.
