PROVENANCE: Private collection North Germany, acquired from the Galerie Commeter Hamburg, 1936 (Auction 69, lot 190).

Ruths manages in his own unmistakeable way not only to capture the Italian landscape at hand topographically, but also to immerse it into the unmistakeable light of the south. He optimises the depicted atmosphere by reproducing the setting at the time of the sunset and by overlaying the painting with a veil of warm color. Ruths is counted among the pioneers of German landscape painting and among the artists, who developed and cultivated the plein air painting technique in Hamburg already in the early 19. century. [AS]

In good condition. Tiny brown spot on the sky. Isolated tiny color flakings on the lower left image area. With many, tiny retouchings mainly on the lower image area.
