Er verbesserte das Fernrohr, entdeckte die Saturnringe und erfand die Pendeluhr (unabhängig von Galilei, bei der er nur den Isochronismus des Pendels beschrieben fand, aber keine technische Anleitung zum Bau). Sein vorliegendes Horologium bringt eine mathematische Analyse der Pendelbewegung und ist "die originellste Leistung auf diesem Gebiet seit Galileis Discorsi" (PMM). - Auch in anderer Hinsicht wirkte das Buch richtungsweisend: Bentley gefiel die Typographie so gut, daß er sie zum Vorbild für seine Edition der Principa von Newton nahm (Bentley 1708 an Newton: "Pray look on Huygenius de Oscillatione which is a book very masterly printed"). - Etw. gebräunt (vereinz. deutlicher), weißer Unterrand sorgfältig gewaschen und tlw. ergänzt. Einbd. restauriert.First edition of this famous work. With fullpage woodcut and numerous diagrams. Contemp. vellum. - Somewhat browned (few leaves stronger), lower white margin carefully cleaned and partly rebacked. Binding restored.
