• In the combination of straight lines, soft edges, warm-toned, rectangular color fields and checkerboard patterns, as well as a slight asymmetry, Scully creates an fascinating work of great appeal
.

"[The prints] have an independent life. And I want to make an independent body of work. There are things you can do with prints that you cannot do with any other medium. [..] It involves a process that's been around for a very, very long time, hundreds of years and there is something about that I like."
Sean Scully in an interview with Julia Klüser, 1998, quoted from: Konrad Oberhuber, Tonneau-Ryckelynck u. Sabine Fehlemann, Sean Scully. Prints (Catalogue Raisonné 1968-1999), Vienna/Wuppertal 1999, p. 143.
