Lot description
Merlin. 1921.
Tempera on firm, canvas-structured board, laminated on panel.
91 x 60 cm (35.8 x 23.6 in). [JS].

• One of the rare exaggerated expressive, mythical religious motifs in Birkle's oeuvre.
• Made before Birkle's famous, today lost, work "Kreuzigung" (crucifixion, 1925), in which the artist also depicts Christ's body in an extreme exaggeration.
• Wonderful example of both Birkle's expressive style of the early 1920s and his idealization of the unity of man and nature.
• In 2018/19 featuring in the exhibition "Magic Realism. Art in Weimar Germany 1919-33" at Tate Modern, London.
• Birkle's works in the dissecting manner characteristic of his Weimar days count among the most spectacular rediscoveries on the art market
