Spitzbergen, Merzzeichnung. 1929/30.
Collage made of offset prinst, partly in colors, and of cardboard and paper, on board.
Orchard/Schulz 1630. Verso inscribed: "Oeuvre Nr. 1929, 1239", presumably by a hand other than that of the artist. 12.6 x 9.5 cm (4.9 x 3.7 in). Backing board: 24 x 16,5 cm (9,4 x 6,4 in).

The "Merzzeichnungen" (Merz Drawings) count among the artist's most sought-after works on the international auction market.
- A merry interplay of seemingly useless things that is absolutely one-of-a-kind in Schwitter's oeuvre. It has an innocene that deceives the observer.

PROVENANCE: Ernst Schwitters, Lysaker, 1948-1978 (heir of the artist).
Galerie Gmurzynska, Cologne (until 1993, with the gallery label on the frame).
Private collection Hesse (since 1993).

LITERATURE: Jutta Nestegard, Kurt Schwitters i Norge, Typoscript, Våren, 1993, illu. 5.
