"It is a genre [winter landscapes] of which I have not shown any works in Hanover and in which I have been able to establish quite a reputation in Munich. This year's winter offered a great variety of motifs, so that I could not resist exploring the field to the fullest. I needed, of course very warm fingers and feet and I am grateful to my robust nature, which allowed me to bear being out in the snow much longer than others have the patience to paint plein-air in summer."
Heinrich Bürkel in a letter from January 20, 1836, in: Luigi von Bürkel, Heinrich Bürkel 1802-1869. Ein Malerleben der Biedermeierzeit, Munich 1940, üp. 62.
