PROVENANCE: Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia.

The painter Joseph Winkelirer (who named himself "Winkler" as of 1842) studied at the academy in his hometown Düsseldorf under Peter von Cornelius. Initially he was active as portrait painter and historical painter, as of around 1830 he increasingly turned to landscape painting. Since 1829 Winkelirer had shown his works at exhibitions in Düsseldorf, between 1832 and 1844 his works are regularly shown at exhibitions at the Berlin Academy. He was a close friend of the painters Johann Wilhelm Preyer and Gustav Preyer. Around 1830 he portrayed his friends in the paintimg "Die Brüder Preyer zeichnend im Ahrtal" (today in possession of the ‘Stiftung Sammlung Vollmer‘, Wuppertal). Their circle of friends also comprised the writer and art collector Anton Fahne and his wife Julie Stommel, who initially studied with Winkelirer and then with Johann Wilhelm Preyer. Today only few works of Joseph Winkelirer are known, which makes them very rare on the art market.
