"The scene is full of tongue-in-cheek humor, similar to the works by Bürkel‘s friend Carl Spitzweg. The farmer‘s gaze into the vast and empty landscape makes the situation bizarre and forlorn. The brown horse slightly bows its head, feeling guilty and perplexed, while the gray horse is so 'ashamed' that it hangs its and nibbles on the grass."
