There is a high degree of empathy and a special connection with the landscape of his homeland North Frisia that enables Emil Nolde to see it as a source for his rich artistic creation. This actually rather barren northern landscape, which is subject to a permanently changing light, inspired Nolde to make so many atmospheric works that they make for the lion’s share of his artistic creation. The high sky with the ever motif of clouds above the plains, in which every elevation is something spectacular, is the core theme of almost all these works. The sky’s dramatic play determines the painting’s dramatic expression, this delivers proof of Nolde’s great artistic empathy that he shows for his homeland’s landscape. Changing atmospheres of daylight and weather are the basic tone of these Frisian landscape compositions
