This work originates from Erich Heckel‘s early period of creation, which brought forth the artist‘s most significant graphic achievements. The sheet has the typical strong edges that predefine the image space in which the artist places the three tightrope dancers. Despite the woodcut‘s hard contours of the individual forms and the resulting two-dimensionality, the figures seem to move within the image space and perform their tightrope acrobatics. Owed to the intentional integration of the wood grain, Heckel attains soft-focus effects in both the black and the white parts, which suggests a certain physicality to the depicted figures.[ST]
