Ruhende Pferde. 1912.
Woodcut.
Lankheit 825. Hoberg/Jansen 23. Inscribed "Frz. Marc 1912" and "12" presumably by a had other than that of the artist. One of 3 known proofs from the black printing block. On laid paper (with truncated watermark). 16.5 x 22.8 cm (6.4 x 8.9 in). Sheet: 21 x 27,6 cm (8,2 x 10,8 in).
Hand-made proof from the black block, aside from the color woodcut impressions and the edition for "Der Sturm".
Ten years ago the mere black proof was offered on the international art market for the last time.

In 1912 this woodcut was made aside from the first edition in colors and aside from the edition for "Der Sturm". While proofs from the first and second edition are quite rare, proofs from the black printing block - among which our work counts - aside from both editions are extremeyl rare. Through the reduction of the illustration to the paper's light shade and the black color of the printing block the sheet gains a dynamic that the color prints hardly attain at all. In addition, this is yet another document of Marc's mastery in equally working out the animal's plasticity through lines and surfaces.
