Pechstein became acquainted with the life of fishermen in Nida in 1909. From that point on such motifs became an established topos in his oeuvre. In our sheet Hermann Max Pechstein captured people and objects in their characteristic outline and creates a statuary composition of timeless validity. To Pechstein their hard work and life are a metaphor for the struggle for existence and the importance of collectives. Depicting these people in an appropriate and dignified manner was an artistic challenge for Pechstein
