Private collection Southern Germany.

The natural freshness of this sun-bathed landscape is quite surprising, as most landscapes by Otto Modersohn are characterized by a rather dark palette. The colorful composition emanates an atmosphere of a summery joy, which finds harmonious fulfillment in the richness of detail. Largely untouched by the upheaval of his days, Otto Modersohn maintained an artistic culture that was geared at tradition and open to Modernism. And yet, his paintings must be regarded as an adaption of a culture that had its climax in the first decade fo the twentieth century. The graphic element, dominant in German modernist painting at the same time, plays no role in his art. His paintings are created from color and evoke a touching warmth. [EL]
