LITERATURE: Hermann Kunisch, Max Liebermanns Selbstbildnisse, in: Jahrbuch Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Band XXIV, 1987, p. 359, illu. 71 (there presumably dated 1922).

The examination of the self occupied many artists. It is an interrogation of the most intimate kind. Max Liebermann also chose the self portrait as one of his preferred motifs. The critical and unsparing view onto himself is not characteristic of all these self-portraits. Especially the smaller works in study-like execution emanate the authenticity of their origin, since they lack any claim to representation. Max Liebermann's self-portraits occupy a key position in the artist's oeuvre. They show the artist's critical exploration of the self, using the findings to form an image. Max Liebermann rendered self-portraits in drawings and in prints, proof of how relevant this subject was to him. Rembrandt and van Gogh have left behind remarkable self-portraits, which should not narrow the view on Max Liebermann'sworks, as they are an admirable achievement of the German late impressionist.
