Private collection Southern Germany.

Our powerful and high-contrast drawing from the possession of the renowned family of gallery owners and scholars Cassirer, delivers proof of the importance of Primitivism for Kirchner's creation. The work, converted into elementary abstraction, unerringly rendered on the back of a hand-written fragment of a letter, shows far more than just the traditional fruit bowl: An archaic stool with lovers in right, as it was obviously repeated in "Nacktes Mädchen hinter Vorhang" (Gordon 154); and with the lost chair from his studio, which Kirchner carved in the style of African sculptures in 1909, in left (Henze 1909/10 and pp. 87f.). This piece of furniture - a low chaiselongue with a female nude with crossed arms on the backrest - reoccurs in several paintings and graphic works from those days. The interplay of erotic, abstraction and "Primitivism" allows insight into the inspiring atmosphere of an "expressionist" studio
