In the mid 1960s, Schmidt-Rottluff had already reached an age of more than 80 years, the artist had to give up painting in oil for health reasons and began to entirely focus on small-size watercolors and India ink drawings. In his late period of creation ever new perspectives regarding motif, form and color came into being - just as it is the case with this still life. These mature creations compensate the wealth of artistic expression of the acclaimed expressionist, whose entire oeuvre, including the works on paper, covers a period of more than 70 years and is of seminal importance for Modernism.
