EXHIBITION: Commemorative exhibition Alexander Koester, Ständige Kunstausstellung der Münchener Kunstgenossenschaft, Maximilianstr. 26, Munich, 1933 (cat. no. 8849).

The artist regularly visited the region on Lake Constance as of 1908 in order to depict the vast water landscape in different kinds of weather. "In Koester's pictures the ducks symbolize the aspect of freedom in nature. He sees them in the play of sunbeam reflections without any aggressiveness and drama. This is also an explanation for the unique atmospheric value of his pictures, which is characterized by an affectionate observation of a peaceful moment in the animals' lives. A high degree of Realism, in line with best 19th century traditions, helps him to realize his intentions." (Mario-Andreas von Lüttichau, in: ex. cat. Munich et al 1985, Alexander Koester. Werke aus der Schenkung Else Eckhard, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich 1985, p. 27).
