The pastel is a present from Ludwig von Hofmann to his godson Kurt Hesse for Christmas in 1906. This is documented in a letter from the painter to Kurt's mother Agnes Hesse, neé Thiersch, attached to the rear of the frame. In the letter Hofmann also mentions that it is a motif of the Gotthardt mountain in the Swiss Alps. Kurt died at the beginning of WW I at the young age of 20.
