Zwei Bauern. 1922.
Lithograph.
Dube L 419. Verso with the estate stamp of the Kunstmuseum Basel (Lugt 1570b) and the hand-written registration number "L 426 III". One of just a few copies. On yellow paper. 31.9 x 39.8 cm (12.5 x 15.6 in). Sheet: 36,5 x 44,7 cm (14,3 x 17,5 in).
[EL].
Very rare lithograph, for the first time on the international auction market (Source: artnet.com).

PROVENANCE: Private collection Switzerland.

As far as technical options are concerned, the lithograph offered Ernst Ludwig Kirchner a way to directly transfer a graphic idea into a printing process. The stone's unusually strong black offset adds a mysterious aura to the composition, which is increased by the two silently smoking peasants. Kirchner makes use of all the stone's impurities for the realization of the scene, and gainfully integrates them into the composition. Prints on yellow paper can also be found with other artists of Expressionism. The eye-catching yellow paper makes for a clear contrast with the image's black print and emphasizes the effect of a breech of conventional ways of seeing.
