Gletscher. 1958.
Watercolor over pencil.
Signed, dated and titled lower right. On Ingres laid paper by Fabriano (with watermarks "C.M.Fabriano" and "Ingres"). 48.2 x 62.1 cm (18.9 x 24.4 in), the full sheet.
The work shows the Morteratsch Glacier in the Oberengadin - just as it is the case on the similar painting "Gletscher-Landschaft", (cf. Vogt 1955/6). [JA].

We are grateful to Renate Ebner and Hans Geissler, estate Erich Heckel, Hemmenhofen on Lake Constance, for their kind support in cataloging this lot.

PROVENANCE: Estate Erich Heckel (sold in 1983).
Villa Grisebach, Berlin, auction on 5 June, 1999, lot 276.
Private collection Northern Germany.

In his late mountain and glacier pictures Erich Heckel dispensed with spatial depth in favor of the composition's inherent laws. The form and surface contrasts between the light clouds and the snow in opposition to the rocks and meadows push the landscape illustration aside.
