PROVENANCE: From the artist's estate.

The human figure is at the core of Oskar Schlemmer's art. In 1928 he wrote: "For the new life, a modern attitude towards the world and life, knowledge of man as a cosmic being is essential.“ (quote after ex. cat. Staatsgalerie Stuttgart 1968, p. 21). Time and again Schlemmer approaches the illustration of this type of modern man in his drawings. The physical statics of his figures makes them beings from a future world: Schlemmer's profile head appears distant and blurred, indeed, almost "cosmic“ and spiritual, yet it precisely follows the prnciples of composition. Despite all physical schematization, Schlemmer suceeds in showing his figure's identity.
