This composition is a good example of the free and gestural process of creation that Imi Knoebel has pursued since the mid 1970s. In comparison with the strictly geometric works that he had been occupied with before, this work is characterized by an almost exuberant spontaneity. The usage of spraypaint painted over the expressive charcoal drawing even increases this impulsiveness. With these drawings the artist "..liberates abstraction from its traditional heaviness, its formal gravity and its air of moral superiority.."
