Unlike it was common in academic circles in those days. Carl Spitzweg's comprehensive oeuvre was dedicated to landscape- and, in particular, to genre paintings. Instead of choosingsubjects relevant for world history, he preferred motifs from everyday life, describing the world of the common people in Germany with a great sense of humor. This choice of themes and the Biedermeier 'tranquility' his paintings emanate, so to speak the "good old days", match the taste of the emergent middle class and laid the basis for Spitzweg's popularity, which is still big today. This early work shows a young couple in love, a motif Spitzweg rendered in ever new variations and constellations over decades.
