Fröhliche Schlittenfahrt. Um 1910.
Oil on panel, cradled.
Signed lower right. 17.5 x 21.8 cm (6.8 x 8.5 in). [CB].

Wierusz-Kowalski became popular for his sensitive illustrations of Polish country life. Depictions of racy horse sleigh- and carriage rides are characteristic of his art and became his trademark. What is so typical of his art are his unusual perspectives from which the painter captures his motifs. Even in this small-size painting the front team of horses seems to directly pace towards the observer at the side of the road. His subtly dynamic style adds great liveliness to the superbly rendered motif.
