Owed to the friendship with Alfred Kubin and the "Brücke" members Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel, Lyonel Feiniger gained inspirations that opened up new dimensions for his art as of 1912, when first architectural compositions with the characteristic Cubist fragmentation were made. The drawings show subtle parallel black lines that form surfaces which interprete the space. In the drawing "Niedergrundstedt", the silhouette of the Thuringian village is dispersed in an almost futuristic manner. Feininger dissects the subject with subtle lines, deconstructing it into prismatic broken forms that he places in an open image space. He suggests houses, streets and the sky with just a few broken lines. His mastery in dispersing a subject while maintaining a feeling of calmness, also becomes obvious in this dawring.
