The striking immediacy that Otto Dix employed for the presentation of his figures remained unmatched by most of his contemporaries. With an unusual poise and spontaneity Dix captured his models' character traits, just as it is the case with the two lovers in this work. On the one hand the shy blushing girl, on the other her gentle but demanding lover. However, Dix emphasizes the bond between them and their harmony. He was confident that the way he saw people helped him to really grasp them: "Hundred photos of a person are just hundred different snapshots, hundred short moments, but never the phenomenon as a whole. Only the painter sees and forms the whole." (Suse Pfäffle, Otto Dix. Werkverzeichnis der Aquarelle und Gouachen, Stuttgart, p.21)
