Haifische. 1920/21.
Lithograph.
Dückers S I 66. With typographic sheet number in lower left. Inscribed "Grohsz". by a hand other than that of the artist. One of a total of presumably 10,000 copies. On wove paper. 20.6 x 27.4 cm (8.1 x 10.7 in). Sheet: 26,1 x 36 cm (10,3 x 14,1 in).
Sheet 66 from the portfolio "Ecce Homo" released by Malik-Verlag, Berlin 1922/23.
The porfolio "Ecce Homo", in which sheet is contained, is part of a number of portfolis and graphic cycles made in those days. Between 1920 and 1923 alone George Grosz made six portfolios and books. In this work Grosz shows his ambitions as a sharp chronicler of his time in characteristic manner. Just how provocative Grosz's works were shows the prosecution for "violation of public morality", following the release of "Ecce Homo".
