Mataré's terracotta sculpture \u699 Eva mit der Schlange' is one of his rare commission works with a religious content. However, as it is the case with all of Mataré's sculptures, it clearly shows a focus on the essential and the haptic element. Accordingly, Sabine Maja Schilling also mentions the 'idol character' of Mataré's plastic works with a reference to the voluptuous female figures that are often associated with archaic and exotic sculptures, however, she emphasizes: "His works are no imitation, they are characterized by an inner approach to a mythical meaning and tenor. This female type, which also appears in Expressionism, is a metaphor between the wordly and the spiritual to Mataré, it is an expression of his sensitive closeness to nature. His refined feeling for form widens the gap between him and the primitivism of ancient figures and the emotional tension bearers of Expressionism.“ After the sculpture was damaged in the exhibition at the Stockholm Svens-Franska Konstgalleriet, the owner commissioned Mataré to make a bronze version after this model. Three of the six known copies were cast during the artist's lifetime. [BF]
