"It is not enough to just say a color is red, as the color is red matter, too. A concrete tangible matter. Its sequacity must be overcome, only then will it develop character.“ (From: Emil Schumacher, "Aphorismen", 1972, quote after: Joachim Büchner, "Farbe und Materie, Ausdruck und Form – Wandlungen von Wirklichkeit“, in: Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartskunst, Emil Schumacher, p. 3). In his material pictures, just as it is the case with this work "Alf I“, Schumacher leaves the color a lot of freedom and allows it to take on character. Colors in his works are perceptible, not just visually, but also haptically. Schumacher mixes the paint with sand, in order to attain the highest possible degree of materiality, and applies it to the canvas in pastose manner. The emblematic black forms that break the lucent color relief inspire the observer to free associations and interpretations.
