PROVENANCE: From teh esdtate of the artist Alexander Amandus von Wahl (1839-1903), Munich (verso with estate stamp, not in Lugt).

Christian Friedrich Gille initially studied landscape engraving at the Dresden Art Academy under Johann Gottfried Abraham Frenzel. Owed to his great talents, he soon turned to oil painting and became student in the studio of Johann Christian Clausen Dahl as of the late 1820s. Gille preferably made landscape subjects that clearly stand in the tradition of his teacher Dahl. Over the following years he was active in Dresden, of which numerous topographically identifiable works deliver proof. During those days sketches in oil gained increasing importance in the artist's work. With a high level of artistic freedom and ingeniousness, the artist succeeds in pursuing new paths within Dresden 19th century painting. Even though an oil painting byGille was included into the collection of the Dresdner Gemäldegalerie (Old Masters Gallery) by decision of the Academic Council in 1874, the artist never really managed to become established during his lifetime. After a long illness Christian Friedrich Gille died in Dresden impecuniously at an old age in 1899. Largely ignored during his lifetime, his works were met with the recognition they deserve only at the beginning of the 20th century. The private collector and art lover Johann Friedrich Lahmann (1858-1937) from Dresden, who came across numerous studies in oil and drawings by Gille of which he acquired a great number, plays a particular role in this regard. Lahmann counted among the cultural-historically most influential members of the Dresden society. His focus was solely on aspects regarding artistic quality and he entirely ignored contemporary art market tendencies. Today the largest body of works by Christian Friedrich Gille in a public collection is in possession of the State Art Collection in Dresden, as well as in the Kunsthalle Bremen, Johann Friedrich Lahmann's place of birth. Both collections largely benefited from donations and Lahmann's vast estate, as he had compiled some 400 works by Gille. A large part of this private collection was auctioned by Rudolph Lepke in Berlin in 1938, which meant the irreversible end of this truly unique collection.
