Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein, initially student of his father Christian Leberecht Vogel, was born in Wildenfels, Saxonyin 1788. From 1804 he attended the Dresden Academy. After sojourns in St. Petersburg and Rome, he was appointed professor at the academy in Dresden and became court painterin 1824, in 1831 he was ennobled (von Vogelstein). He went on numerous journeys through Central Europe and Italy. In 1853 the painter settled in Munich. His renown is largely based on his portraits, which are in possession of many German museums today. [CB].
