This work's authenticity has kindly been confirmed by Prof. Markus Lüpertz. We are grateful for his kind support in cataloging this lot.

Markus Lüpertz counts among the most important figures of German Contemporary Art. Even though it was Lüpertz who redefined and brought figurative painting, against the predominant taste of the days, back to life in the 1960s, this work from 2002 rather calls reminiscence of US Color Field Painting from the 1950s. The focus in this work is on the color and its communicative strength. Markus Lüpertz makes use of this finding by backing a color's suggestive power with strong words such as "power", "justice" and "wisdom", as a reference to classic virtues. Our expressive work is a visualization of the creative process for the design of the chancellery in Berlin. Lüpertz created allegorical color spaces for the main staircase, their colors symbolizing certain virtues: blue stands for wisdom, umbra for power, ochre for justice, green for prudence and red for courage.
