Burmester initially studied under H. Lauenstein and H. Crola at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, later with G. He was active in Kiel and Möltenort since 1889 and was appointed professor of the landscape class at the Kassel Art Academy in 1912. After he had retired he returned to Kile in 1930. Burmester's landscape motifs always originate from his most immediate surroundings, they are a prime example of early German Impressionism, especially this work with its atmospheric play of light and color.
