Hilla Rebay von Ehrenwiesen's fame was not solely based on her activities as musem director and patron, for she was decisively involved in the founding and establishing the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, but also on her artistic success. Hilla von Rebay was trained at, amiong others, the renowned Académie Julian in Paris. Her art is predominantely abstract and thus reflects her favorite genre. Rhythm, dynamic and sound play a central role in her art. This work "Erect" as well as the collage "Piccicato" (lot no. 461) are sensitive works full of fragility. Their play of delicate forms captivates the observer. [KP]
