After color woodcuts had come up and slowly replaced the laborious coloring by hand in Germany around 1500, Hendrik Goltzius was the first Durch artist to make woodcuts in colors in the late 1580s. The individual colors are applied to the different printing blocks and make for a composition. [CB].
