In a letter to Hanne Koeppel he wrote on 6 January, 1929: "I was in an almost demonic state of creation - made a series of 12 sheets - >Ali, the gray stallion, fate of a Tatar horse< that's it - You know I've been loving horses since I was a child, and again, I've also always been scared of them. - As a natural being the stallion is the epitomy of maculinity to me." (Transl. of quote after, notes on portfolio IX, p. 306). [KH].
