At first Albert Flamm had studied architecture at the art academies in the Flemish town of Leuven and Düsseldorf before he eventually turned to painting entirely as of 1840. Together with Oswald Achenbach he took lessons with Achenbach’s brother Andreas. Additionally, they went on many journeys, for instance to the Rhine and Mosel region, to Southern Tyrol and Upper Italy. From 1850 to 1853 Flamm lived in Rome and travelled to Naples and Sicily. Afterwards he settled in Düsseldorf again, however, he time and again, almost every year, went on journeys to Italy with different artist friends. Substituting for Oswald Achenbach he headed the landscape painting class for a year at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1871. Flamm was member of several artist associations, as early as in 1848 he was founding member of the renowned Düsseldorf ”Malkasten“ (Paint-Box). Along with Oswald Achenbach, Albert Flamm is regarded one of the most renowned ‘Italy painters’ at the Düsseldorf School.

In terms of style and theme, Albert Flamm was strongly influenced by his gifted friend Oswald Achenbach, however, he still found his own artistic style. ”The paintings that were quite popular with the audience resemble works by Achenbahz, particularly as far as their sketch-like and easy duct, their plein-air concept as well as their rich warm and golden colors are concerned. But despite all productivity, Flamm worked more carefully and avoided superficial effects. Characteristic are sun-flooded and nuanced light atmospheres, virtuous renderings of atmospheric perspective, high observer perspectives, panorama-like vantage points and strong chiaroscuro effects.“ (Carsten Roth/AKL).
