Although Horst Antes' early works on paper clearly appear to be abstract works, a notion of figuration breaks through in this sheet. This is underlined by the title "Paar" (Couple) on the one hand, but also by its origin in the decisive early period of creation between 1958 and 1962. Works from this period are characterized by "[..] the imaginative potential of artistic means, the point, the straying line, the spot or the color cloud [..]" (translated quote after Figur Wolkenfänger. Horst Antes und der malerische Aufbruch in den 1960er Jahren, ex. cat. Sprengel Museum Hanover 2002, p. 12). They lead to numerous associations within the observer, controlled by the artist by means of the title which points the direction of the image’s impression. This puts clear how much an expression of inner driving powers this small work is. [KP].
