This pastel presumably served as a preliminary study to the oil painting "Die Blumenterrasse im Wannseegarten nach Norden" (Städtische Kunsthalle Mannheim; WVZ Eberle 1919/17). However, the painting shows the flower beds in summer with the charactic red geranium, whereas the pastel shows the bed in spring with blue pansy. This confirms that Liebermann sometimes tried out his Wannsee compositions in pastel." (Translation of quote from Margreet Nouwen).

This work's authenticity has been confirmed orally by Dr. Margreet Nouwen, Berlin. It will be included into the forthcoming catalog raisonné of pastels, watercolors and gouaches.
