Preliminary drawing for the drawing "Der Erschütterte" (Schult 1008. Laur 464-466). The study is characterized by clear lines and hard contours, which shows Barlach's fundamental academic training. A journey to Russia in 1906 influenced his artistic development substantially. Impressions of rural life and Russian folk art found expression in his strong and popular design of his sculptures and prints as well as in his drawings, such as it is the case with this one. [DB].

We are grateful to Dr. Annette Wittboldt, Ernst Barlach Foundation Güstrow, for her expert advice.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Hesse.

EXHIBITION: Ernst Barlach, Kunsthalle Bremen, 1959, cat. no. 90.
