Gianpietro Carlesso was born in Bolzano in 1961. He studied art at the Istituto Statale d'Arte in Trento from 1977 to 1980 anfd completed the Accademia di Belle Arti in Urbino in 1984. On a Wilhelm-Lehmbruck scholarship from the City of Duisburg he worked in Rheinhausen near the Krupp steelworks in 1989/90. In the following years he had exhibitions at the Galerie 44, Düsseldorf and the Galerie Sander in Darmstadt. After his return to Italy he began to teach sculpting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Urbino.

The usage of the material Belfast Black granite with its absolutely black color and fine-grained, even texture leads to a very tense expression. The twists and turns seem statically tightened , but yet, the matt surface gives it a soft appearance. [EH]
