Next to Horst Antes, Dieter Krieg belongs to the most remarkable representatives of the New Figuration, a tendency in art which was in strong opposition to the then dominating primacy of abstraction. Its main subject was the depiction of the human figure. Dieter Krieg studied at the academy in under HAP Grieshaber and Herbert Kitzel. His work received recognition from an early point on, in 1966 he was awarded the "Kunstpreis der Jugend" for painting in Baden-Baden. Since the mid 1960s the depiction of the human torso was in the focal point of his œuvre. However, he does nor depict humans in their natural form, but more as rudimentarily bandaged forms, which take on human features only by means of their bulging hands. Krieg's boldness in omittance may have an oppressive effect, however, this impression is attenuated by his usage of lucent colors. These two poles are characteristic of Krieg's mastery. [SM].
