The Spanish artist Enrique Serra y Auque was born in Barcelona in 1859 and studied at the local art school. On a scholarship he went to Rome in 1879 in order to study at the renowned Accademia di San Luca. First good sales and several commissions from th pope make for an increasing popularity. In 1895 Serra set up a studio in Paris that would soon become a meeting place for young Spanish artists. As illustrator for the Spanish magazine ”Ilustración Española y Americana“ he was known by a broad audience. His paintings were exhibited on numerous exhibitions, in 1888 he was awarded the gold medal of the universal exhibition in Barcelona. The same year he showed works at the renowned gallery “Sala Parés“ in his hometown. Little is known of his last years. Serra died in Rome in 1918.
