Butin 46. Catalog raisonné of paintings: 325/8. Signed, dated and numbered "8" on verso. Copy 8/(120). 27 x 40 cm (10,6 x 15,7 in)
Released as annual bonus of the Westfälische Kunstverein, Münster. The 120 canvases were put next to one another to form one block of 270 x 480 cm that was painted as a whole and sold individually.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Rhineland.

By means of painting on the surface of jointed canvases in his “Vermalungen“ (Blurs), made as editions in various executions between 1971 and 1973, he creates “a chaos of endless motion, so that the color traces that stretch across all canvases are inextricably interwoven into one another. The motions do not seem to have neither beginning nor end, they do not follow a comprehensible rhythm and do not make for a color system. [..] (Butin, p. 34). Despite this inner, apparently final interdependence, every part of this work undergoes a metamorphosis after the canvases have been taken apart, becoming an independent painting liberated from the original context.
