We are grateful to Dr. Ulrich Schumacher, Emil Schumacher Foundation Hagen, for his expert advice. This work is registered in the archive under the number 0/1.714.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Hesse.

Emil Schumacher makes paint and image carrier the actual object of his pictures, they are the true protagonists of his art. While Schumacher was still trying to break the limits of the two-dimensional representation with his “Tastobjekten“ (Tactile Objects ), works that he made as of the 50s, with mounted material, such as screws, wood and fabrics, he clearly restricts himself to the materials paint and paper in his later gouaches. The image carrier’s structure, its creasing, its own form are made comprehensible in these works in a unique way. Paint and material merge to one physical entity, which seems to have clotted to a thick earthen crust in the center of our compositions in shades of black and brown. [JS].
