Gianpietro Carlesso was born in Bolzano in 1961. After having received his first education in arts in South Tyrol, he studied at the academy in Urbino. From 1989 to 90 he was working on a Wilhelm-Lehmbruck Scholarship in Rheinhausen, where the artist, who works mainly with stone, discovers metal as material for his art. At the same time he shows works at the Galerie 44 in Düsseldorf and the Galerie Sander in Darmstadt. In the following the artist is called to teach at the academy in Urbino. Stone is still his favorite material, which he processes with a high degree of esthesia. In doing so, he attains to transform the material’s rough character to a certain airiness and softness, by giving the object a form and surface finish that sort of lets the material speak. This is also how the title "Decostruzione" is to be understood. Some 33 sculptures were made on this topic between 1991 and 1994. Works of Gianpietro Carlesso can be found in the collections of the Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt am Main and the Museum for Modern Art in Bolzano. He lives and works in Cormòns, Italy. [EH].
