His 1990s photographs are devoted to sexual themes. Bill Henson is indeed a twilight photographer, who tracks down the uncertain borderline zones between day and night, nature and civilisation, maleness and femaleness. His landscapes and nudes are in the Romantic tradition. They seem to have sprung from cobwebs of dream rather than reality, whisking the viewer away to a mysterious transitional world in which melancholy, loneliness, natural beauty, vague anxieties and innocent eroticism from an indissoluble aesthetic whole.
