Komposition Schwebende Formen im Raum I. 1923.
Watercolour.
Buchheister/Kemp 1923/14. Monogrammed and dated lower centre. With date, title and inscription on the reverse. On firm wove paper. 39,9 : 24,9 cm (15,7 : 9,8 in), the full sheet. The year 1923, when Buchheister switched to abstract painting, marked a turning-point in his career. The painterly devices he deployed in his earliest abstract works already attest to enormous aesthetic self-assurance - an indication of the intensity with which the artist was engaging with abstraction. “We must de-form the representational things with which we work, which affect our emotional life, grasp their meaning, that is, paint in the abstract. As a painter one must be a personality. It is the task of the artist to find a commensurately agonisingly poignant form for his agonisingly poignant personal feelings.” (quoted in: Willi Kemp. Das abstrakte Werk von Carl Buchheister, in: Buchheister/Kemp, vol. 1, p. 101). [NB]

AUSSTELLUNG: Cabinet Gute Kunst, Prof. Dr. O. Karpa, Hanover, 2 August - 4 September 1949.
